Creepy Crawly Critters - Lice

The start of School is always an interesting time. Kids are excited to get back and see their friends and I know for us as parents we look forward to settling back into our regular routine.

School also brings with it unfortunately some unwanted things such as germs and illness.

And lice - which has always made me itchy just thinking about it.

Unfortunately, this past week we got to deal with it. I do count ourselves lucky that it was the 1st time. With two kids it's nice to have made it this long before encountering it.

The change in play

When I was growing up – and when the majority of you were growing up I imagine there was no such thing as a “play date”. When you wanted to play with someone you rode your bike or walked over and knocked on their door to see if they wanted to come out. Most times, unless they were grounded they were allowed out since most parents sent their kids out to play until the street lights came on or it was time for dinner. We might even pick up a phone and call our friends. Concepts that nowadays seem foreign to kids.

The one thing there definitely wasn’t during those times was parent involvement in the process. No one consulted their calendar to see when it would work to get John and Jane together to play. We just played. We weren’t trying to schedule play time around excessive amounts of extracurricular activities some kids are involved in or parents hectic schedules. We came home from school dropped our stuff off (some of us even had keys to let ourselves in while our parents were still at work) and then took off to a friend’s house. We came and went out of our friends’ houses in the neighborhood as if we lived there too, sometimes staying for dinner or vice versa.

Writer's Workshop: Camping

One of Mama Kat’s writing prompts this week was:

Share a camping location that you think is a Must-visit

A friend messaged me a couple nights ago after seeing me comment about going camping at Whiskers Point Provincial Park in a couple weeks. Turns out they are camping there this weekend in the same site we booked and wanted to know more about the creek I mentioned that runs near the site.

Last time we were out there we took pictures of not only our favorite campsite but the other ones we wanted to book in the future.  Since a picture is worth a thousand words I sent her the pictures I had showing the campsite and short path to the creek. I am sure that their kids and dogs will love this spot!

Summer Fun

There really is not much about summer that I dislike and those few things (namely mosquito, sunburns and allergies) I am willing to tolerate for lovely weather and all the fun things that go along with it!

There is just something about the warm weather that makes me feel at peace.

I am really looking forward to making a lot of memories this summer. So far, we have a road trip planned to go back and visit family and friends take in some local attractions. A must see on our list is this Dam that neither my husband nor I ever went to while living in the area.

We will also be definitely getting out for some camping trips as it is one of our favorite ways to enjoy the outdoors. Catching frogs, swimming, hiking, campfires, and all the rest of the fun that goes along with it.

When you feel like you have failed

Parenting is not an easy job. It’s a long journey, one filled with joy, heartbreak and challenges along the way.

Our parenting journey has had the added experience of our kids having been diagnosed with varying conditions meaning that both of them require extra supports at school and at home.

We are lucky to have had some great experiences working with some of the people on our teams.

If there was one area that I would pinpoint as a challenging one to navigate it would be the school system. There are so many different variables and people involved that it can be difficult to coordinate everyone on the team and find effective ways to communicate among each other.

Falling Down...on a Friday

I have a history of having bad things happen to me on Friday nights, and many years ago it was even narrowed down to a specific time after two separate bad events occurred on Friday nights around 6pm.

I have since acknowledged that that bad things will happen anytime, anyplace but listen to my story and you will see why back then I got a bit leery about Friday nights around 6pm...

-16 weeks pregnant with firstborn child, I was struck by a truck while crossing an intersection, ripped mirror off with my head and dented in door badly enough it couldn’t be opened. Suffered concussion and required 16 stitches to head. Baby thankfully was fine! Occurred on a Friday evening around 6pm.

-About a month after being struck by the truck I was attacked by a dog outside the grocery store on my way inside. The dog lunged at me jumping on my now prominent belly ripping the front of my jacket then getting a grip on my arm causing puncture marks and blood to be drawn. Trip to the hospital and all checked out okay, had my tetanus shot up to date so other than getting my armed cleaned up and bandaged and having to sew up my jacket, the only residual issue from this was a fear of large dogs.
