Why I painted my pumpkin teal this year

Halloween is kind of a big deal at our house. I’m not afraid to admit that we have more totes of Halloween decorations than we do for Christmas.

We enjoy dressing up, whether it’s simply throwing on some masks or being a bit more creative with theme costumes that involve a mixture of handmade and store bought aspects such as our Star Wars theme from a couple years ago.

Something else that is actually a real big deal and not something to joke around about is food allergies. I have made sure for years to buy peanut free chocolate bars and usually also have rockets in our stash of treats to hand out.

But something I didn’t really think about before was those kids that have severe allergies and can’t actually eat ANY of the food treats available.

Halloween: This Or That?

Halloween just happens to be my families favorite time of year..we actually on more Halloween decorations than Christmas ones. We love decorating our yard and our house, which reminds me that the decorating hasn't started so we better get with it!

Also, I just have to share that my daughter said to me the other day: "Mom, when is Halloween and Christmas and Easter?  I need these Holidays in my life then I will not fuss as much. I mean I might fuss a bit, but mostly I have fun. Remember, Easter last time I fussed just a little bit and was really happy."

Apparently now I just need to declare life one great big Holiday and there will be no more fussing..or at least only a little bit..

Getting onto the prompt I chose from Mama Kat's weekly writing prompt, here are my Halloween "This or That" answers.

Sticky Garlic Noodles {Gluten Free}

Summer is the perfect time for quick meals and this one fits the bill getting you in and out of the kitchen in just 15 minutes.

Garlic, noodles, butter and just the right hint of sweet and salty made this a winner in our house. Except of course for the picky 7-year old who had plain pasta with chicken and parmesan cheese. The rest of us declared this a definite keeper!
The great part is that there are many ways to adapt this recipe for different dietary needs, explained here where I found the recipe. I cooked up some sliced steak, chicken and some shrimp to offer some variety.

What's your road trip style?

To be honest, my road trip personality is not something that I ever really consciously thought about. It quickly became apparent when trying to plan a vacation with friends that we have very different road trip personalities though.

We are most definitely the type who like to take things slow, purposefully planning stops at certain locations/attractions to have lunch, get some amazing pictures, you get the idea.

As they said in the Cars movie, “folks didn’t drive to make great time, they drove to have a good time”

Menu Plan Monday - May 23 2016

This past week went by without me getting a whole lot done since after I finished my amoxicillin to treat my ear infection I broke out in a rash. A head to toe, itching all over rash that had me leave work early heading straight to the walk-in clinic. 5 days of steroids, daily allergy medication and lots of rest and I am finally able to get back to my regular routine.

To catch up on everything I missed this last week, meals are going to be pretty low key and easy this week, since we also have a lot of meetings/appointments/school events going on this week too. I have spent the weekend doing some heavy duty purging/house cleaning and plan to continue with this work despite our busy week. I am also trying to clean out our deep freeze so that I can defrost and properly clean it out so these meals will help with that goal too!

Be sure to go check out all the other great meal plans at Org Junkie this week!

Menu Plan Monday

Boy oh boy was this Monday ever a Monday...you know the ones where things just seem to not go the way you want. It was honestly one of those days at work that had me not liking my job that much. We have also been dealing with some ongoing vehicle issues that we think are resolved but you can just imagine my frustration when my vehicle would not start after coming out of the grocery store on my coffee break. Turns out that it simply was the end of life for my battery so got it replaced yesterday. Happy it was just routine maintenance this time.

How our vacation got extended by a day

It's been just over two weeks since we got back from our vacation. Twelve days away is the longest we have spent away from home in years and it was a great trip. But, as I am sure you can all relate it always feels good to go home too. Just when we thought our vacation was over, we had an unexpected delay in getting home.

As planned on the day we left to fly home we finished packing our things, then headed out to spend the last few hours we had hanging out making memories with my Dad before he dropped us off at the airport.

In order to be able to get home in one day and not have to catch a VERY early morning flight we flew out of Toronto airport, an hour's drive away from my Dad's rather than from Hamilton.

We had a few stops along the way, going from Toronto to Calgary, a wait for the next flight to Vancouver,  and then waiting for our  flight at 9:45 pm from Vancouver to home.

Things were going pretty good, we had a bit of a rough landing in Calgary but thankfully had a bit of time to wait until our next flight. At this point, Karensa was saying her tummy didn't feel good and we thought either it was from the bumpy landing or the fact that she hadn't eaten anything except snacks since breakfast.

Menu Plan Monday - May 9/2016

It's been just over a week since we got home from our vacation. And while it was great to be home I quickly realized a couple things, the main one being that I hadn't actually cooked a meal in the two weeks we were gone! My Dad either cooked us something yummy or we ate out or went to visit with family for dinner at their place.

The 2nd thing I realized was that it was going to be important for us to get back into our regular routine. With our anniversary, my birthday and Mother's all happening in the last week we certainly did not follow our regular meal r\outine either.

So this week I am happy to be back on track, planning out our meals for the week and linking up as part of Menu Plan Monday with Organizing Junkie.

The simple thing that made me smile this week

I overheard a phone conversation between my daughter and my father earlier this week.

They talked about the latest movie she wants to see, her new toy, school and she gave him detailed instructions on how to play clumsy ninja, one of her favorite games.

The phone call lasted for a ½ hour.

She got off the phone and said “Mom, Opa says when I come visit we will go get ice cream

As I responded to her I smiled.

Wordless Wednesday: Two ways to complete a maze

I will leave it to you to figure out which was my daughter's path and which was mine! I will say this much she is definitely always one step ahead of me.

Menu Plan Monday

We have a fairly busy week so I am glad I took the time to sit down and come up with a meal plan to limit the chaos of meal time at least! As usual when I make a meal plan I have linked up over at Organizing Junkie as part of Menu Plan Monday

Monday - Normally I take the time to cook us a nice meal without convenience items but on busy nights like tonight we need something fast and easy. We found Johnny's potato/cheddar powder soup mix at Costco recently and really liked it.  Grilled cheese will be made for the picky child eater.

Tuesday- Taco night

Wednesday- My go to slow cooker dinner is putting a chicken in to cook all day. I plan to serve some lemon roasted microwave potatoes, cooked carrots and leftover buns with it. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/151802/lauras-lemon-roasted-potatoes/

Thursday- We will use the leftover chicken from Wednesday night to make salads. We have spinach in the fridge and in addition to the chicken will add in cucumbers, peppers, dried cranberries. I like adding some mushrooms to mine and have some feta cheese in the fridge so will throw some of that in too. I like that each member of the family can customize their salad as I simply put the spinach out with bowls of cut up vegetables/toppings.

Friday- Like I mentioned above we usually eat mostly home cooked meals.  Sure we at times rely on things like Annie's boxed Mac and Cheese for lunch but I am very happy to have found this kid pleasing homemade mac and cheese recipe from Living Well Mom. It is definitely a keeper! http://livingwellmom.com/2012/05/easy-kid-friendly-macaroni-n-cheese-recipe/

Saturday- Going to give this recipe a try - pineapple bbq meatballs - http://diethood.com/pineapple-barbecue-sauce-glazed-meatballs/

Sunday- Going to give this recipe a try - teriyaki chicken with pineapple -  http://www.barefeetinthekitchen.com/2012/11/teriyaki-chicken-with-pineapple.html  http://www.barefeetinthekitchen.com/2012/11/teriyaki-chicken-with-pineapple.html
What are you planning for dinner this week?

Five (recent) favorite things

Over at Mama Kat’s weekly linkup one of the prompts she gave was to list our five recent favorite things. So in no particular order here are mine:

1. Adult coloring books: Of course I colored as a child. Adult coloring books are a whole new world compared to the the thin paged cartoon books of our childhood. I have started a nice little collection of books/coloring supplies and am finding it's a great stress reliever. Which apparently it's obvious I need. I was at the mechanic the other day (luckily an oil change this time and not another unexpected repair) when telling him of my broken toe he remarked "it's been a tough 6 months, scratch that a tough year for you guys". Pretty bad when the mechanic recognizes your life has had more downs than ups the last year.

2. Kids –  This is  specifically in relation to my daughter lately. Always one to keep us on our toes and be leaving us waiting for the next funny antic she has not disappointed this week. She brought home a letter from a friend at school that asked her for a sleepover soon. Well, when I went to pick her up at school the other day, her friend walked by and said “See you next weekend for a sleepover!” It was obvious the girls were badly wanting this so I messaged her friends Mom that evening to make the arrangements. When I told Karensa this she informed me that she had invited another friend but told her that the sleepover would be on Friday. Seems I am the last to find out about the plans of 7 and 8 year old girls.
