Why I don't make New Year's Resolutions

I hear and see it everywhere this time of year..Scrolling down my Facebook Wall the word resolution is popping up everywhere and conversations abound about what everyone’s New Year's resolution is for the coming year..

I don't make New Year's resolutions because I am pretty sure that I won't follow through on them. After the Holiday's I am looking for things to slow down a bit rather than add something to my to-do list.

I set goals for myself when I know that I feel I can accomplish` them and am ready to start actively working towards them. I re-evaluate throughout the year and change or adapt my goals as needed.

This is what works for me, but I know lots of people out there set a resolution at the beginning of January and if that is what works for you then I am all for it. Anything to help one achieve their goals is a good thing.

Still, I do sometimes wonder how many of those resoltuions actually are met.

Do people make New Year's resolutions just because society has made us think we should? Are broad goals made, with no plan in place of how to achieve them or no drive to do so just for the sake of the calendar turning over?

I think that you should set your goals when the time is right. Too many goals are set in the New Year haste and not followed through on.

So, even if it is not January, make a goal, set a plan and evaluate your progress as you go.

  1. Even I agree with you on the fact that resolutions are pretty boring. I have always kept some, then followed it probably for the first 5 days not even a week!) of the new year and then just forget about it. Setting goals for short term period is much better!

  2. I've stopped making them as I don't like to fail and I usually do.

  3. I usually don't make them, but this year I really wanted to clean up my house and get organized!

  4. I don't make anything that's too drastic, something little and achievable works for me. Mine this year is to drink 8 cups of water and to eat more veggies!

  5. I just make resolutions when they are needed not when a specific date comes round

  7. I don't make resolutions because if I don't follow through, and in the past I haven't, I just feel bad about it.

  9. I completely agree with you on that one. It is always a good time to set some new goals and start working towards them. I hear so many people say, oh i'll wait until the new year. I think people just put too much pressure on themselves when transitioning from one year to the next can be exhausting enough as it is :)
