Book Review: 30 Days To Understanding Other People by Bev Flaxington

In my review of Understanding Other People by Bev Flaxington I talked about how I have had communication difficulties at work and how this book could help improve communication skills. I recently was able to review her next book, 30 days to understanding other people, a handy daily guide to improving relationships.

In this book Bev begins by explaining how quite often we naturally want to try and change others when we have an encounter that does not go our way. However, ultimately we cannot change others however we can change our communication patterns with them. This can be easier said than done,  so thankfully this book has 30 days of lessons to help you.

Each day there is a simple exercise provide to work towards the end goal of better understanding those you communicate with and how to more effectively navigate the sometimes challenging world of interacting. Intertwined in the practical advice Bev offers up witty humor and brief vignettes, things she herself has personally experience or witnessed.

This certainly helps to keep one from losing interest in the material and provides clear examples of the objective for the chapter.  I especially liked that each chapter provides enough information to give great detail yet at the same time is short enough to make the goal of reading and working on one exercise a day easy to accomplish.

As a bonus if you are looking for more in-depth work on communication there is also a 60 day option with instructions in each chapter on how to extend your learning to the next day. For those Animal lovers out there be sure to check out the section at the back of the book that covers lessons we can learn from our Furry Friends!

Whether you decide to follow the 30 day, 60 day plan or skip around and focus on the areas you most want to work on, this book is a valuable resource for communicating with others.

  1. I love books that break things down into easy daily chores. It makes it seem less overwhelming.

  2. I could definitely benefit from this type of book. I would like the daily exercises.

  3. How interesting! I think many of us really do not take the time to figure out what a person is really saying or why they do what they do.

  4. This would come in handy with the people I work with! Thanks!
