WW: Mother/Son Day Out {with linky}

On one of my recent WW posts I showed my Brave Mom photo of our trip to Home Depot for one of the Kid's Workshops. As promised here are the rest of the photos from that day. Despite backing into the shelf and banging his head we had a great time hanging out, having lunch and even sneaking in some shoppping afterwards for a new life jacket for Nathan. I love the pictures of him showing off his muscles while we were shopping! And making an extra storage box for his sister was a nice surprise (he even painted them when we got home).

Inactivity is the new smoking???

I think that the majority of people likely have exercise on their mind, at least once in a while. Thinking about what is the right type of exercise, are we doing enough, etc.

And for anyone that isn't (not pointing any fingers) it appears that we should be. According to a study published in the Medical Journal, Lancet, Physical inactivity could be the new “smoking” in terms of health related effects.

It was found that inactivity was responsible for 5.3 million out of 57 million deaths throughout the world in 2008, and it caused about one in 10 deaths globally, which is comparable to the effects of smoking. By comparison, about 5.1 million die annually because of smoking, as an accompanying comment article points out.

Fabulous Friday List #1

I love when Friday rolls around which of course means a couple days off work. I thought I would start off a regular post here with a list of Fabulous things I found over the week.

5. My kids will be in for a shock when I serve worms for dessert at Halloween! http://www.theidearoom.net/2009/09/jell-o-blood-worms.html

6. Watermelon, feta cheese and cucumber in a salad made for a delicous easy to make lunch! http://www.mytastycurry.com/2012/05/summer-salads-watermelon-feta-cucumber.html

7. Pack rat- yes I admit it, I am one. I have been using the box method for sorting through my stuff http://profoundpuns.hubpages.com/hub/Cleaning-Tips-for-Pack-Rats Still have lots to get rid of but so far I am doing well.

8. Following the path of least resistance. This definitely sums up our bedtime routine with our almost four year old. http://www.parenting.com/article/how-to-get-your-kid-to-sleep-in-her-own-bed

9. Zero waste! Wow…this is amazing (and overwhelming) at the same time. I’m all
for recycling, reusing and reducing but not sure I would want to commit this much time. That being said as mentioned in the # 7 I could definitely do with less.

WW: It's been so hot this week! {with linky}

I guess once it reaches 27 degrees Celsius inside the house even the stuffed animals start to get a little thirsty. I found these two perfectly posed by Karensa the other day and had to snap a picture to share!

Book Review: The RX Factor by J. Thomas Shaw

It has been awhile since I have been able to read a book and so I had high hopes that this one would be a good read. I instead found that not only was it a good read, I very quickly got caught up in first two chapters of the book and just had to keep reading. This story gives just enough information and suspense that slowly builds to make you not want to close the book.

The RX Factor
Mayday, Mayday, Mayday! Piper Foxtrot X-ray. Nassau, Nassau. Sixty miles northwest of George Town, altitude 7,500 feet and falling, heading 270. Tail exploded, ditching aircraft, six souls on board. Piper Foxtrot Xray. Nassau, Nassau!

Winter Wonderland in the summer

On a recent walk in the park, we came upon an interesting sight. Karensa went running into the "fluff" calling out SNOW, SNOW!" The white fluff is actually seeds from the abundance of cottonwood trees in the area (which by the way have nothing to do with cotton, it is a type of Poplar tree whose seeds just happen to look like little pillowy clouds or snow to a couple of kids). They had a wonderful time and despite Nathan not sticking around long enough for me to get individual pictures of him I got some good pictures of the adventure.

I am just thankful that we are still enjoying summer and the real white stuff is at least a couple months more away from coming down!

COPY KIDS REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

We never really had issues in getting our son to eat fruits and veggies,actually he was the ONLY child who when we went to parties would be standing at the fruit and veggie tray rather than munching on the chips and treats like the other children. While things have changed a bit over the years since then, he is still a pretty good eater of various types of foods. Recently he even asked to try mushrooms and discovered that he now likes to eat them. When I served this zucchini, mushroom and tomato pizza he ate it (and only showed distaste at having even zucchini after learning it was zucchini).

Now our daughter is a bit of a different story, she goes through more phases where it times it seems the only fruit or veggie she would eat was grapes, apples or cucumber and turn up her nose if you tried to offer something else. After watching the Copy Kids DVD we received I managed to snap a picture as proof of the first time I have been able to get her to eat raw broccoli. Normally I steam it, top with cheese and she picks off  the cheese, leaving behind the broccoli. Given the at the Copy Kids DVD features children not only eating but talking about various fruits and veggies I was hopeful that this would have some impact on her eating habits..

Cooking with the kids: Sloppy Dogs

Nathan chose this recipe recently for dinner, and I had both kids help out in the kitchen to make it. Both of them quite enjoyed this meal too, so it is definitely a keeper and is nice and easy to prepare.

The recipe is Sloppy Dogs found in Disney's Magic Kitchen Cookbook. This book is full of simple recipes for kids to help make with great Disney Characters featured throughout.
